The Story of the CEO: From Guitar to Outsourcing
How does an 11-year-old’s decision lead to a passion for sharing knowledge?
I was very fortunate because, at the age of 11, we borrowed a Commodore 64 for a few weeks during the summer. Back then, it wasn’t accessible to everyone.
This was when I decided that I only wanted to work with computers.
And the first program commands came:
10 print “Hello World”
20 goto 10
I realized that anyone who understands computers gains a lot of advantages in life.
Then I became a teenager and started playing guitar instead, as it was better for attracting girls. But when my band released our first demo tape, the drummer decided not to come to practice anymore.
We were left with a demo tape but couldn’t perform live.
Since the bass guitarist-singer knew a bit about programming, we asked his mother if we could use her computer (an IBM 486SX-33, normally used for accounting) for music editing.
From that point on, we didn’t need a drummer, and the world opened up to us. Fasttracker (a music editor) was our everything. First, we replaced the bass guitar with samples, and later I sold my guitar and bought a computer.
But then came the big setback. I couldn’t afford a better sound card or video card.
I bought the computer to make music and play games, but since I had bought the cheapest one (a Pentium 1), only MS Excel and MS Access ran on it. And Minesweeper.
So I sat at home and experimented with MS Access because I quickly got bored with Excel. I discovered that with Visual Basic, you could customize queries extensively and automate some tasks. And I must confess, I also used the VBA macro recorder.
By chance, a multinational company was looking for someone to build a more advanced database.
They hired me, but at 21, I decided to start a small company to work externally. It was a good decision because they soon said they liked my work and needed a few more people like me, as the dreaded deadline was approaching.
Let’s build a team!
With the help of my 4-member team, we put together a database that allowed SAP to launch in one of Hungary’s largest factories. However, as soon as it launched, I saw that there were many unique needs that either the system couldn’t meet or could only be extracted at a high cost and slowly.
And here came the big milestone: in 1999, we leased a developer for the first time! Fun fact: we are still very good friends to this day.
It took many successful experiments to determine what services to offer to the world. But at the center has always been human knowledge and programming.
